A guide to payment methods

Are you lost among all the payment methods? Do you want to get to know the individual payment methods and find out how they work and how to set them up? This article will explain everything you need to know.

Payment cards

Paying by payment card is currently the most popular method of paying online, and that is unlikely to change. It is a fast and efficient payment method which, thanks to 3D Secure verification, is also maximally secure.

It is very easy – the customer simply enters their payment card details at the payment gateway, then authorises the payment in their bank's mobile app, and the payment is made! What is more, the payment is credited to your GoPay business account immediately after the customer pays. Unlike an offline bank transfer, you do not have to wait for the bank to process the payment.

We currently accept payment cards from these issuers:

  • Visa

  • Visa Electron

  • Mastercard

  • Mastercard Electronic

  • Maestro

You can also use accompanying functions with card payments, such as recurring payments or pre-authorisation.

In your GoPay account, a card payment is displayed in the E-payment overview with the specific acquirer (the provider of the card payment) marked – Six Payments or OmniPay:

You can set up card payments in your GoPay account following the instructions here.

Bank transfers

Payment by bank transfer comes second in popularity among paying customers. With GoPay you can now offer your customers 3 types of bank transfer:

Offline

Customers also know this type of transfer as payment by QR code. It is a standard bank transfer which the customer submits themselves using the details we provide (we display them at the payment gateway and also send them by e-mail); alternatively the customer can scan the QR code in their mobile banking, which is also part of the bank transfer details.

Banks process this type of bank transfer during office hours on working days, so there may be a delay before the payment is credited to your GoPay business account.

A payment submitted by offline transfer at the weekend, for example, may not reach you until Monday morning (or the next working day).

Offline bank transfer is available for all Czech and Slovak banks.

In your GoPay account, an offline transfer payment will look like this in the E-payment overview:

Online ("online payment buttons")

With an online bank transfer the customer simply confirms a pre-filled payment order after logging in to their internet banking.

A payment submitted this way takes place online and always within the same banking institution. Thanks to this it is credited to your GoPay business account immediately, or exceptionally within a few hours of the payment order being confirmed.

Clients of these banks can currently use an online transfer at the GoPay gateway:

Czech banks: Raiffeisenbank, Komerční banka, mBank, Fio banka, Česká spořitelna (Platba 24), UniCredit Bank, ČSOB
Slovak banks: Slovenská sporiteľňa, UniCredit Bank, Tatra banka, Poštová banka, VÚB

You can recognise an online transfer payment easily in the E-payment overview – it will be marked with the specific bank we received the online transfer from:

PSD2

A PSD2 payment is a new type of bank transfer based on the European PSD2 payments directive. The aim of this payment method is to make bank transfers simpler and faster.

A PSD2 transfer works on a simple principle – the customer allows access to their bank account and makes a payment from it. Thanks to this the payment is confirmed immediately and is credited to your GoPay business account just as fast. It is a compromise between an offline and an online bank transfer.

We currently support PSD2 transfers at the following banks:

Czech banks: Moneta Money Bank, Air Bank, Česká spořitelna, ČSOB, Fio banka, Banka Creditas, Komerční banka, Raiffeisenbank, J&T Banka, UniCredit Bank

Slovak banks: ČSOB, Fio banka, Komerční banka, mBank, Raiffeisenbank, Slovenská sporiteľňa, Prima banka, Tatra banka, UniCredit Bank, VÚB

You set up all 3 types of bank transfer in your GoPay account following the instructions here.

In your E-payment overview, a payment with this payment method will be marked PSD2, with the bank we received the PSD2 payment from shown in brackets.

Digital wallets

PayPal account

Paying by PayPal account is widespread primarily among foreign customers, but it also finds its users at home.

A PayPal account user can pay either with the balance they transfer to their PayPal account or from a saved payment card.

A payment by PayPal account takes place immediately; this payment is not, however, credited to your GoPay business account but directly to your PayPal business account. In your GoPay account you can only view the payments made.

To activate this payment method you have to have a PayPal business account set up and then activate it following the instructions here.

A payment by PayPal account is displayed in your E-payment overview like this:

Cryptocurrencies

Bitcoin

Crypto as the new dollar? The virtual currency bitcoin is winning more and more supporters worldwide and here too.

You do not need any special account to receive payments in this cryptocurrency. The conversion takes place at the current rate and we credit your GoPay account with the amount in the currency corresponding to the order (for example, a customer orders goods for CZK 250 in your e-shop, pays with bitcoin, and CZK 250 arrives in your GoPay business account).

A bitcoin payment takes place immediately and is credited to your GoPay business account just as fast.

💡 GoPay tip: The minimum payment amount must correspond to 0.0001 BTC at the current rate.

You can set up this payment method in your GoPay account following the instructions here.

In the E-payment overview, a payment with the cryptocurrency bitcoin looks like this:

Mobile payments

MPlatba

This payment method lets the customer pay using their own mobile phone – or rather their operator: the payments are deducted from the credit on a prepaid card or added to the bill in the case of a tariff.

Mobile payments are very practical for paying smaller amounts. A payment can be submitted at any time, with an online guarantee that it has been made.

MPlatba is displayed in the E-payment overview with the specific operator marked:

Premium SMS

Like MPlatba, Premium SMS is a payment through a mobile operator, in this case specifically by SMS.

Both MPlatba and Premium SMS are credited to your GoPay business account immediately after the customer pays; their settlement to your bank account can, however, be delayed by up to 40 working days (until the tariff's billing period closes and the mobile payment is covered by the operator).

We currently support this payment method for these mobile operators:

CZ – O2, T-Mobile, Vodafone
SK – O2, T-Mobile, Orange

💡 GoPay tip: A mobile payment can only be made through the operators listed above.

You can set up mobile payments in your GoPay account following the instructions here.

Premium SMS is displayed in the E-payment overview in the same way as MPlatba, with the operator marked:

Voucher payments

Paysafecard

Paysafecard allows goods and services to be paid for with a prepaid card that the customer can buy or top up through a network of payment terminals.

A payment from a prepaid card is anonymous and has the same value as the user loads onto it. The customer then makes payments with a 16-digit PIN code. Paysafecard also has a defined spending limit, however, so we do not recommend it for paying for expensive orders.

A payment from a Paysafecard card will be credited to your GoPay business account immediately.

To be able to use this payment method, you need to be registered with Paysafecard. To register, please contact us at [email protected]

In your GoPay account, a Paysafecard payment will look like this in the E-payment overview:

Other payment methods

Google Pay

Google Pay is a payment method that allows easy and fast payments using a card stored in a Google account.

The customer uploads their payment card details to Google. When they then pay, Google passes the details to the payment gateway and the gateway completes the payment without the customer having to have the card with them.

In practice it is a payment card payment, so the payment will be credited to your GoPay business account immediately after it is made.

You can activate it in your GoPay account following the instructions here.

In your GoPay account the payment is displayed in the E-payment overview in the same way as a card payment, with the specific acquirer marked (see payment card payment):

Apple Pay

Apple Pay is a payment method that allows easy payments using a card stored in Apple Wallet (the payment method is therefore intended exclusively for users of Apple devices).

When paying, the payment card details are passed directly from Apple Wallet and the customer does not even have to have the card with them. If they do not have a card stored in Apple Wallet, they will be offered the option of adding a new card at the gateway.

As with Google Pay, it is a payment card payment, so the payment will be credited to your GoPay business account immediately after it is made.

You can activate it in your GoPay account following the instructions here.

In your GoPay account the payment is displayed in the E-payment overview in the same way as a card payment, with the specific acquirer marked (see payment card payment):

Click to Pay

Like those above, this payment method allows easy, fast and secure payments with a payment card that the customer has stored digitally in their Click to Pay account.

The customer selects the Click to Pay payment method. With the first payment they enter their card number, create an account with the card saved in Click to Pay and complete the payment. With the next payment the gateway offers to log in to Click to Pay and the customer pays from the cards already saved.

As with Google Pay and Apple Pay, a payment with this payment method takes place immediately, so there is no delay in it being credited to your GoPay business account.

We will be happy to activate this payment method for you on request. Please write to us at [email protected].

In your GoPay account the payment is displayed in the E-payment overview in the same way as a card payment, with the specific acquirer marked (see payment card payment):
