How do I activate the PayPal payment method?

1. Use an existing PayPal business account or create one

To activate the PayPal payment method you need to connect an existing PayPal business account. Check whether you have a PayPal business account. A PayPal business account is always tied to a specific e-mail address, and if you registered one in the past you would find messages in your mailbox (check e-mails received in the past from [email protected], if they have not been deleted). If you do not have a PayPal business account yet, you can register one during the connection process (see the information below).

2. Check that PayPal is enabled in your payment methods

Log in to your GoPay business account and check in Settings > E-shops > Payment method settings (see the guide) that the PayPal payment method is enabled for the relevant e-shop. If the PayPal payment method is not shown in the selection, it is disabled for you – for more information contact us from your registered contact at [email protected]
This is how you can enable the PayPal payment method on all e-shops kept under your business account.

3. Grant the permissions and activate the PayPal payment method

You then activate the payment method and connect it to your PayPal business account
in Settings > PayPal account.

  • In the E-mail field, choose the e-mail address to which your existing PayPal business account relates, or for which you will register one. If the e-mail address is not yet available in the list, let us know and request that it be added, writing from your registered contact to [email protected]

  • In the E-shop field, choose your merchant outlet. If you have several merchant outlets registered with us, select the preferred one. The connection will, however, be valid for all e-shops for which you enable the PayPal payment method (see the information above).

  • If you tick "Share data with PayPal", data will be pre-filled in the following steps, which makes the process easier if you are registering a PayPal business account. If you do not select this option, nothing will be pre-filled (the e-mail address, and in the case of registration the company information from your business account will not be pre-filled either, so you will have to enter it manually).

  • Click Confirm.

3.a You did not select "Share data with PayPal" and you already have a PayPal business account

Enter the e-mail of your PayPal business account, check the region and confirm.
The following steps are the same as in 3.b.

3.b You selected Share data with PayPal and you already have a PayPal business account

You continue to the next page with the message "Connect your PayPal account and start accepting payments on the GOPAY s.r.o. website.". Check that the pre-filled e-mail address of your PayPal business account and the region are correct. Then click "Next" and on the following page log in to your PayPal business account by entering your e-mail address and password.

During the process PayPal may also ask you to complete the verification required under the PSD2 directive.

On the new page click "Go back to [GOPAY]...." and a choice of options will be displayed.

  • 1 – the option to return to your GoPay business account (this interrupts the process)

  • 2 – to continue and finish the connection – log in with your PayPal business account credentials using "Log in" in the "Log in with PayPal" section.

Now confirm your consent using "Grant Permission"

You will be redirected back to your GoPay business account and a confirmation that the connection was completed successfully will be displayed ("PayPal account permissions were granted successfully").
Congratulations, your e-shop / e-shops now have the PayPal payment method activated.

At the bottom (Remove permissions) you will also see the option to disconnect the permissions in the future. Do not click Remove now – the connection has to stay in place for the PayPal payment method to work.

3.c You do not have a PayPal business account registered yet

First follow step 2. and 3. If you ticked the Share data with PayPal option, most of the details will be pre-filled during registration from your business account. If you do not tick it, you will have to fill everything in manually during registration. The screenshots below show the variant without sharing data with PayPal.

Enter the same e-mail you gave for your PayPal business account in your GoPay business account, check the region and confirm using the button.

Enter the password that will be used to log in to your PayPal business account, confirm the same one in the second field and then continue using the button. Before you continue filling in the following form, open your mailbox separately – within a moment you should receive an e-mail from PayPal (sender [email protected]) asking you to confirm the registration (click and confirm using the "Get Started Now" / "Confirm Your Email" links in that e-mail and complete the confirmation according to PayPal's instructions). Only continue filling in the form once you have confirmed it, see the information below.

Now continue by filling in the form about your company and add the data relating to your business.

For the connection to work correctly, you also have to agree (tick) the last item at the bottom containing consent to integration with GoPay, and then confirm using the button.

Choose the type of business and continue using the button.

In the next part you need to choose the type of services / products (according to PayPal's code list), the e-shop website, the country of your business and the descriptor (the short description your customers will see on their statement), and continue using the button.

Fill in the information about you as the person setting up the PayPal account and confirm using the button.

Continue using the "Go back to [GOPAY]...." button.

After activation, log in to your PayPal account by clicking the "Log In" button.
The following steps are the same as described in point 3.b.

Congratulations, your e-shop / e-shops now have the PayPal payment method activated.

Please note that after registration your PayPal business account will only become active once PayPal has completed its verification. You will find the information after logging in to your PayPal business account. Payments made while verification is not complete may not be paid successfully.

If at any point you are unable to complete the process of connecting a newly created or existing PayPal business account (something unexpected happens in one of the steps), let us know from your registered contact at [email protected]
Specify which step it was, how you proceeded and what was displayed incorrectly (ideally attach a screenshot or a video).

4. Activating further currencies

The default currency for accepting payments via PayPal is the Czech crown (CZK). You can activate further currencies as follows:

a) Log in to your PayPal account and click the "Currencies" button.

b) You select further currencies using the "Select new currency" button. A list of the currencies you can activate will be displayed. Then press the "Add Currency" button.

💡 GoPay tip:

You will not see the PayPal payment method in the "Movements" tab of your GoPay business account. Because we only provide the technical connection, all payments and movements are recorded directly in the PayPal account.

You can, however, check the payments in your GoPay business account (GoPay monitor) in the e-payment overview.

5. An error displayed during connection

If, after you confirm with the "Go back to [GOPAY]...." button, an error is then displayed in a red frame (see the example), it means that you have several e-mail addresses entered in your PayPal business account and the one you are making the connection for (the one you also confirmed in your GoPay business account at the beginning of the process) is not set as the primary one.
Please set it as the primary one in your PayPal business account first and then continue with the connection (i.e. start again from point 3.).
