The GoPay payment gateway offers an unlimited number of ways to display payment methods during a purchase.
In this article you will find the basic ways of displaying payment methods. You can use this information during the payment gateway integration and also if you already use the payment gateway and are working out how to improve its performance.
1. Decide which payment methods you want to use
Choose the payment methods you will offer according to the nature of your business and your customers' preferences.
The GoPay payment gateway supports payments by payment card, instant bank transfers, payments via electronic wallets, voucher payments and payments via Bitcoin.
💡 GoPay tip: The payment methods used most at the GoPay payment gateway over the long term are online card payments and instant online bank transfers. Combined with cash on delivery and payment on collection, these methods are among the most used ways of paying at most Czech e-shops over the long term.
Alongside payments through GoPay you can also include special payments from other providers in your order, e.g. payments by instalments (e.g. through Home Credit, Cofidis and so on). You should not forget cash payments such as cash on delivery either.
2. Organise the payment methods into categories
If you displayed all the payment methods in the order at once with no related logic, you would make choosing a payment method considerably harder for customers. So organise the payment methods into related categories and present them accordingly.
The basic criterion for creating the categories is whether the payment takes place offline or online. Payments can also be divided by the way of paying and by the bank where the customer holds their account.
You can therefore organise the payment methods available at the GoPay payment gateway, combined with the most used offline payment methods, as follows:
Cash on delivery (offline)
Payment on collection (offline)
Card payment (online)
Instant bank transfer, i.e. online banking buttons (online)
Payment by mobile phone (online)
Payment via an electronic wallet (online)
Voucher payment (online)
Payment via Bitcoin (online)
3. Choose a suitable way of presenting the payment methods
Combine the individual payment methods and their categories to create the list in which you will present the payment methods in the order.
The rule is that the list of payment methods should be as coherent as possible and payment methods from a given category should be displayed together. Lists in the order Cash on delivery, PLATBA24, Card payment, Cash, MojePlatba should therefore not arise. The correct arrangement in this case would be: Cash on delivery, Cash, Card payment, PLATBA 24, MojePlatba.
💡 GoPay tip: The rule is that the most used payment methods should be displayed first in the list, because those are the ones customers will look for most often.
If you offer a larger number of payment methods, do not present them all at once. In the basic display, present only the most used ways of paying and hide the remaining options behind a link, or leave the further specification of the payment method to the payment gateway.
Below you will find the basic variants for displaying payment methods.
A. Direct variant
In this variant the customer chooses the payment method directly in the order. Once the order is submitted, the customer is redirected to their internet banking or to the payment gateway page corresponding to the payment method selected.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
You have full control over how the payment methods are displayed | A more extensive integration |
The payment method is selected during the purchase process | The availability of new payment methods cannot be guaranteed |
Suitable where a large number of payment methods is offered |
|
This variant is used by the largest Czech e-shops |
|
B. Partly aggregated variant
In this variant the customer chooses the payment method partly in the order and partly at the payment gateway, where they are redirected once the order is complete. In the order the customer selects a bank transfer, for example, and at the payment gateway they complete the payment by selecting the specific bank whose account they will pay from.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Easy integration | Requires a redirect to the payment gateway to select the bank |
The availability of new payment methods is guaranteed |
|
Suitable for all types of shop |
|
C. Aggregated variant
In this variant the customer chooses the payment method only at the payment gateway, once the order is complete. Only a single button is therefore displayed in the order.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Easy integration | Not suitable for a larger number of payment methods |
The selection of the payment method is left entirely to the payment gateway |
|
The availability of new payment methods is guaranteed |
|
Suitable in particular for service-oriented shops |
|
4. Follow the basic principles of usability
For your customers to find their way around the list of payment methods really well, it is not enough just to group the payment methods logically and link them to the payment that follows. Seemingly small details such as the description of the individual payment methods and the use of logos or tooltips also have a big influence on the overall impression of the payment and therefore on the conversion performance of the order.
In this chapter you will find basic advice and tips on how to get these details right.
Make the payment method row an active link
The customer should select the payment method intuitively and with as little effort as possible. So wherever you can, try to make things easier for customers. One example is making the row with a particular payment method an active link for confirming the choice. The customer then does not have to confirm their choice by clicking a checkbox or radio button – clicking the row is enough.

Put the information in the payment method row in the right order
Order matters not only in the list of payment methods. The order of the information displayed in the rows with the individual payment methods also has a big influence on clarity. The rule here is that there is no need to be too creative.
💡 GoPay tip: Payment method logos make their presentation in the order clearer. Display the logos right next to the radio button or checkbox so that the customer gets an overview of the payment methods offered simply by scanning.
Display the checkbox or radio button first in the row (i.e. on the far left). The name of the payment method should follow. Then the tooltip and finally the price. Align the price right in a block so that customers can easily compare it across the individual payment methods.

Link the payment methods and the shipping methods
If you offer specific shipping methods that can only be paid for with some payment methods, try to present these combinations in the order as well. The options for cash on delivery or payment by ordinary transfer, for example, should not be active for express delivery.
You solve this problem by using a lighter shade of text colour for the payment methods that are not active for the given types of shipping.
