The banks that issue payment cards can offer their clients several types of card with various benefits, e.g. travel insurance, shopping discounts and so on. In general, payment cards can be divided into credit and debit cards. A credit payment card is always linked to money lent by the bank, i.e. paying with a credit card does not affect the available balance on your current account. A debit card, on the other hand, is linked directly to your money in your current bank account. We recommend checking with your bank which type of card you have been issued.
What information is on the card
A payment card usually contains the following information:
The bank's logo – every payment card carries the mark of the issuing bank, in the top left or top right corner on the front of the card.
The EMV chip – a chip that holds the payment card data for payments at electronic payment terminals.
The contactless symbol – new payment cards carry a mark for contactless payments, where the payment is authorised without entering a PIN, usually up to an amount not exceeding EUR 30.
The payment card number – a 16-digit number. If the details on the payment card are embossed, it is an embossed payment card, which can also be used to pay at places with a mechanical imprinter (no electronic payment terminal is required).
Validity – the date until which the payment card is valid. The validity may be given on the card either as a FROM – TO date or only as a TO date, in the format month/year.
The holder's name – the name of the payment card holder the card was issued to.
The scheme logo – in most cases it is on the front, in the bottom right corner of the card.
The magnetic stripe – the payment card data for magnetic readers is recorded here.
The signature strip – the cardholder signs here with a black or blue permanent marker; the signature does not have to match the specimen signature held by the issuing bank.
CVV/CVC – a 3-digit verification code located on the back of the payment card and required for internet payments.
