The total price of a card payment is made up of three parts:
Interchange fee – the commission received by the specific banking institution that issued the payment card in question.
Card scheme fee – the commission received by the specific card company (e.g. VISA or MasterCard) that processed the payment with the payment card in question.
Other fees – fees divided between the banking institutions and other companies that took part in processing the specific payment transaction.
Depending on the card category, the card brand and where it was issued, we distinguish between regulated payment cards and other (unregulated) payment cards.
Regulated payment cards (consumer debit and credit cards issued in the European Economic Area under the VISA, VISA Electron, V Pay, MasterCard and Maestro brands) are subject to Regulation (EU) 2015/751 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which sets the maximum level of the interchange fee and the card scheme fee.
Other payment cards (commercial VISA, VISA Electron, V Pay, MasterCard and Maestro cards and consumer VISA, VISA Electron, V Pay, MasterCard cards issued outside the European Economic Area) and Maestro are not subject to this regulation, so the total price of a payment with them is higher.
As the table Share of the individual card types below in this article shows, however, in the vast majority of cases we see payments with regulated cards.
Below you will find a complete overview of the fees for regulated and other payment cards.

If you do not want to accept a particular category of payment cards (because of a higher interchange fee, for example), let us know and we will send you a corresponding offer based on your request. At the same time we will deactivate that particular category of payment cards at your merchant outlet, so that holders of such a payment card will not be able to pay with you.
💡 GoPay tip: Once you decide not to accept a particular category of payment cards, you have to inform your customers of this in a clear and unambiguous way.
