A payment via a link, also known as a push payment, allows the customer to pay a failed payment without having to create a new order or go through it again.
💡GoPay tip: A payment via a link works excellently in situations where the customer does not complete the initial payment because, for example, they have low card limits, internet payments are not enabled or there is not enough money in the account.
How does a payment via a link work?
From the point of view of implementing the payment gateway, the principle of a push payment is the same as creating the initial payment. We recommend creating the push payment as a new payment. Because you have the order details available, the customer does not have to repeat them.
How do you work with push payments?
There are two ways to work with payments via a link:
a) Generate links from the GoPay business account,
b) Generate links automatically using the API.
You will find a description of creating payment links manually in the article How does an additional payment link work and where do I generate it?
Automatic creation of payment links is covered below.
Creating payment links automatically
There are countless ways of delivering a push payment to customers automatically and of choosing when to do so. Suitable ways include placing the payment link in the order administration or in the order confirmation e-mail.
1. Placing the push payment in the order administration
If you are one of the e-shops that give customers access to an order administration, you can place push payments right there. In the order administration, customers can change their personal details or edit the order.
💡 GoPay tip: To avoid a situation where the customer successfully submits the same payment twice, your system needs to keep records of all the payments created for the same order ID. That way you will have a correct overview of the order status.
The best thing you can do is query the status of the payments recorded for the given order. If you have the payment recorded as paid, do not allow the payment to be submitted again at that point – that would create a duplicate payment. Tell the customer that the order has been paid correctly.
2. Placing the push payment in the order confirmation e-mail
You can place the push payment in the order confirmation e-mail. Simply insert a link to the e-shop where the customer can submit the payment again.
You can write this text in the e-mail: "You chose an online payment card payment as your payment option. If the payment failed, you can make the payment again using this link: https://eshop.cz/platba-pres-odkaz/order-id-12345/".
As soon as the customer clicks the link, your system identifies the order. The customer is shown the payment method selection for making the payment again. The process that takes place in the background is identical to the original request to create the initial payment. A request to create the payment is sent to the payment gateway and the customer is shown the payment gateway with the selected payment method.
